Although, I etch glass with more advanced etching equipment, you don’t always need it. I prefer to use advanced equipment because it alows me to do things quicker and have more detailed stencils for a elegant look. But sometimes the etching doesn’t need to be detailed. Alot of crafters will just use etching cream. I visited over to another blog that shows a simple picture of her etched wine glass. Her article here, talks about using a digital cutter such as a Cricut and Silhouette for creating a stencil. I don’t know exactly what a Silhouette cutter is, but have heard of a Cricut. maybe she can give you more information on what that is. I have seen people use a Cricut and it appears to work very good for using crafting cream. Some of those cutters only allow you to use the patterns that you buy, but I have heard of an add on to enable personal designs to be cut too.
She then briefly discusses using only tape as a stencil. This is true, you can use almost any kind of tape for a basic stencil like masking tape, duct tape, or mailing tape. Duct tape might be hard to get of though but could be used for abrasive etching.
She also shows some interesting work of Phyllis Holmstrom from a craft fair. You can check it out at her blog.
