Motorcycle Sandcarved Etching

Posted on September 12, 2010 by Eric Robert Posted in Blog Content

So I figured that I would start posting a bunch of examples of different types of sandblast etchings (glassetchingsecrets.com/glasssandblasting.html) such as single or multi-stage carvings.  Some of these are old pictures of when I first started with this hobby.

I’ll try to critique them and give suggestions.  Remember, these are beginner examples, so they are not the best.  I encourage others to critique them also, and you can do this by placing a comment below. As shown below, the first example is a two-stage sandcarving of a motorcycle.

Etched motorcycle in glass with a two-stage sandcarving technique.

You can see that this wasn’t the perfect stencil pattern used.  The front tire has a big space in the tire, so it doesn’t look the best.  The pattern used would look better if it had only a single stage surface etching.  Also, the first stage has some inconsistent depth variations, and there are some over-sprays on the outside of the general etched area.  Make sure you have a consistent flow of abrasive from your sandblaster and mask the areas better.  You can see that this was done on a scrap piece of glass, so it was just an experiment.
