Etching: A Effective Theft Deterrent

Posted on February 13, 2010 by Eric Robert Posted in Blog Content

Throughout the past few years, people have been etching their car windows with the car’s VIN number or “Vehicle Identification Number“.

This has been proven as an effective theft deterrent for your car, because it leaves a permanent marking in the glass.  This allows a police officer to easily check a similar looking car to see if it has been stolen.

Thieves would have to remove the windows and replace them if they wanted to use the car. Otherwise, they might have a higher risk of getting caught.   Most thieves would rather steal a car that doesn’t have any noticeable identification that indicates it is someone else’s.  Also, it can be expensive replacing all the windows in a car.

You can do this yourself by either making a photoresist type stencil or using templates. Lately, I found the there are kits available like the one shown in the picture. I include a link of where to get it from Amazon.

The main goal isn’t to raise flags to the police after it has been stolen, but to prevent a thief from wanting to steal it to begin with.

The police throughout multiple counties have stated that this is an effective way to prevent theft.  But is it?

Well, it’s not a perfect way to prevent theft, but it’s definitely a simple and easy way to prevent it to some degree.  Some police stations have been known to do this free for areas that have high grand theft auto incidents.

As an alternative, you may want to do it yourself, which can be done with some cheap etching creme and a stencil used from a hobby store.  This could also be a business opportunity if you operate a car shop or do mechanic work.  This can bring in some extra business when times are slow, and people are concerned about their car.
