Etch Homemade Candles from Cut Bottles

Posted on April 12, 2018 by Eric Robert Posted in Blog Content, Tutorials 8 Comments

I am rather excited about discussing this today because this idea combined 3 different crafts:

  • Bottle cutting
  • Etching
  • Candle making

The process is very easy with the right technique, is fun, very customizable and inexpensive to make these. They can be made for gifts to give friends and family or sold in markets.

Step 1: Cutting Bottle

The first step is to cut the bottle with one of our Upcycle EZ-Cut bottle cutters. You may cut a wine, beer or liquor bottle.

The process involves scoring the bottle perfectly, heating it up and immediately chilling it so that it separates. A piece of sandpaper is included to sand the edges smooth.

Step 2: Etching the Outside

If the label hasn’t been removed already, you can use soak it in soapy warm water and try to peal it off or scrap it with a flat razor blade. Some people recommend soaking it in acetone to quickly remove them much easier.

I like to etch the cut bottle before making it into a candle, but this is primarily because I often use the sandblasting process to etch which could get a lot of abrasive stuck in the wax. If you choose, you can also do rotary engraving and cream etching after the candle wax is poured and hardened.

In the above example, I actually used the cream etching process with our reusable stencils and it turned out well.

Step 3: Candle Making with Wick, Fragrance and Melted Wax

Then the last step is to simply heat up the wax in a pot on the stove to melt it, add the fragrance, place the wick in the cut bottle and pour. You simply wait for it to cool down and harden. That’s it! The below are some of the etched candles I have made out of old wine bottles.

That is just a brief overview on the steps. Our candle making kits go in more detail on the wax pouring and bottle cutting processes. We now offer a complete package with the bottle cutter kit and candle making kits with all included supplies on Amazon below.

@Debra, are you saying you’re not receiving my newsletters in the inbox? If so, it may be going to the spam box on accident. You have to click on Spam and move it to your inbox. I believe that whitelists it so it will show up the next time.

    Hi,

I am looking at purchasing your bottle cutter, but couldn’t find information on the maximum height it is able to cut. Could you please let me know how high on a bottle I am able to score? Also, do champagne bottles work well with your cutter? I have tried a couple different cutters, and champagne bottles are always tricky because their bases are typically not smooth and even and the way the other cutters I have tried are set up, it is difficult to get an even score line.

    Thank you,
    Sarita Parikh

    Sarita,
Our Upcycle EZ-Cut Bottle cutters will score a bottle up to about 10 inches. You can also modify it by taking out the back screw placing the backbrace in its spot to extend up to about 13.5 inches.

The other option would be to place the bottle neck end of the bottle against the backbrace and adjust it where you need it. That could score it where needed.

Champagne bottles should work well, but if you are scoring the bottle neck, it isn’t currently possible unless the scoring blade is modified.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
