Positive and Negative Etching

Posted on December 17, 2010 by Eric Robert Posted in Blog Content, Tutorials 6 Comments

There are many possibilities with this hobby.  Even using the same pattern can result in two different appearances which are known as positive and negative etching.  Positive etching is basically cutting out a stencil such as the black areas and marking that area.  On the other hand, working with the negative, is when you remove the opposite areas of the pattern and etch those areas instead.  Shown below are examples of similar patterns that were etched in both ways.

Positive etching on a beer mug.

Positive Etching

Negative etching with a similar pattern on a mug.

Negative Etching

You can see that the first positive has the name etched or frosted while the second negative name is not.

If you want to do a negative with a photoresist, you will have to flip the colors with a software program.  In contrast, the pattern doesn’t matter if your cutting them out by hand or using a vinyl cutter since you peel the stencil the way you want it.

    Hi Eric
This is easy to comprehend when you see it but a bugger to explain in words only.
I have trouble explaining it to my customers on the phone

Yes, I agree. Since customers aren’t aware of all the different possibilities, its harder for them to get the idea.

It would probably be good to reference and have your own online resource or website to show the difference. That way they can get the picture of what vendors are talking about. Or some kind of order description page.

    Hi Harry and Anna,
I apologize for the issues. I have tried to contact you multiple times and replied to your emails but have not received a response. I will try again, but I believe your email system may be accidentally moving them to the junk folder.

Can you check your emails in the junk/spam folder and let me know if you receive them?

    Thank you for your patience.
