Micro Motor Engravings of Bird & Western Scenes

Posted on July 17, 2018 by Eric Robert Posted in Blog Content, Glass Art Spotlight 5 Comments

western oil rigThis week we are featuring Matthew Harris and his unique rotary engravings that I thought were unique. He recently picked up glass etching as a hobby.

The first one appears to be a western scene of an oil rig and another more detailed oil rig plant below.

He stated:
I make all sorts of stuff. I’m just struggling on how to price them or how to present a pricing chart for customers. I use a micro motor k35 cube by Saeyang as well as some various dremel rotary tools. My website has some other pieces on it as well at www.matthewharrisart.net.

This third one is a framed engraving of a bird holding a skull.

Thank you so much for sharing, Matthew! Others please leave him a comment below. Also, what is everyone’s thoughts on pricing items?

    Hi Matthew,
Looked at your pieces. Interesting. I also started using a Dremel rotary tool but soon graduated to sandblasting. Based on my approach , pricing must take into consideration the time and effort it took as well as cost of inputs used to create the end product. Rayzist has a great schedule that you can use on their web site and I think it’s free.

I am in the Caribbean Trinidad and Tobago so I also use as a guide what industry prices are in T T dollars . Finally , to be competitive I usually mark down my prices in order to compete with the more established guys in the field.

Wishing you the very best in your endevours.

    Regards,
    Peter Richards

    Hi Matthew,
Wow ! You just took engraving up as a hobby….and you did these very detailed and large pieces? I’d say you’ve got a good future ahead. Based only on what I see…and the style I think you are going for…you may want to try sandcarving. If you were to put multiple stages you would get a better depth of field. That said….wow! Great job!
